Jackie Spurr – Permitting

Jackie [Bsc (Hons) AIEMA] has 14 years experience working for the Environment Agency and as a Principle Consultant specialising in environmental permitting and regulation.   In addition to this she spent two years working within the water industry as a logistical Co-ordinator on the sewerage network.  She has prepared a wide range of environmental permits and exemptions in addition to project management, compliance monitoring, auditing, site inspection and the enforcement of permits.  She prepares:  standard and bespoke permit applications for waste management facilities including landfill, in-vessel and open windrow composting sites, biomass energy from waste, anaerobic digestion,  house hold, commercial and industrial transfer and treatment including asbestos, soil remediation, end of life vehicle recycling facilities, waste to land recovery permits for both the reclamation of land and the use of waste in construction, mining waste facilities, liquid waste transfer and WEEE recycling facilities.  

Mike Daly – Horticulture

Mike (BSc, M.Sc) is BASIS (Pesticides with Integrated Crop Management) qualified, FACTS (Fertilisers) qualified, a FACTS Examiner (horticulture), and is an expert in plant nutrition and growing media. Mike was Technical Marketing Manager for William Sinclair Horticulture Ltd responsible for product quality, product development and trials following 15 years as Technical Manager/Senior Agronomist for the Horticulture fertiliser business at Kemira GrowHow UK Ltd. He has a wealth of experience within the fertiliser, horticulture and agriculture sectors.





Maria Fuhrmann – Air Quality

Maria [Bsc (Hons) AIEMA] has over ten years’ experience in Environmental Consultancy with a particular focus on air quality impact assessment.   Maria specialises in air quality and emissions management, atmospheric dispersion modelling and impact assessment in the context of a diverse range of sectors including waste, agriculture, energy, industrial and commercial applications. Maria also has an extensive background in amenity/ nuisance monitoring and assessment encompassing dust, odour and bioaerosols in the context of IPPC permitting and compliance, impact assessment and statutory nuisance proceedings. Maria’s consultancy experience also has a strong foundation in waste management, including environmental auditing of waste facilities, detailed investigation programmes such as trace gas and stable isotope chemical fingerprinting at landfill sites, and research and development in industrial composting.


Susie Holmes – Soils & growing media

Susie (BSc Hons, CSci) is FACTS qualified and is a soils and growing media expert. She worked for ADAS as a horticultural and soils consultant for 25 years and has an established track record in the growing media and soils sectors, specialising in plant nutrition, soil management and alternatives to peat in growing media. She also tutors on the FACTS Horticulture course.





Claire King – Soils , Compost & Waste

Claire (PhD, CSci, FACTS qualified) has maintained and developed a strong involvement in teaching, consultancy work and research, across a variety of employment with soil science at its heart, for over 30 years. She is a member of The Institute of Professional Soil Scientists, a Chartered Scientist and FACTS qualified.  Recent consultancy work has been carried out within the waste sector in relation to applying waste to land and inspecting compost production to quality standards. This included two projects for WRAP (2013) on the use of digestate in agriculture and horticulture. She tutors on FACTS courses and other agricultural training courses, and has taught soil fertility, plant nutrition, soil management and good agricultural practice for over 18 years, to students in agriculture, horticulture and environmental sciences. She completed a PhD investigating root responses to waterlogging in 2010.

 Denise Ewbank

Denise Ewbank – Marketer

Denise is a qualified marketer working predominantly, but not exclusively, in the land-based sector. During a four year term as Director of Sales and Marketing for a large independent green waste recycling company, she sat on WRAP’s green waste steering committee in the days of the organisation’s inception, providing a marketer’s view of organics recycling and particularly the barriers to selling green waste derived compost into the landscaping trade and domestic markets.  She has worked for WRAP, providing interim project monitoring resource within the Organics team and on a number of agricultural trials programmes over the past five and a half years providing BSI PAS 100 compost producers across the UK with marketing support.  She also works for the Organics team at SITA UK Ltd and the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) as the Association’s Business Development Manager.
